NHL concussion protocol puts players at risk
Teams decide who is removed from a game to go back into the dressing room for further examination. But if teams never decide to take a player out for evaluation, how can they diagnose the concussion? Ignorance, in this case, is dangerous.
Take the case of Hurricanes defenseman James Wisniewski in May 2014 when, as a member of the Blue Jackets, he appeared to suffer a concussion during a playoff game against the Penguins, a game in which Wisniewski returned to play.
